VN Engineers, Inc. worked as a subconsultant to Savin Engineers for this project. VN was responsible for inspection of the safety improvements along the north and south lanes of the thruway. This included removing damaged drainage pipe, replacing it with new poly pipe, and installing end sections. Ditches and swales were cleaned and stoned. The tree canopy was trimmed back and dead trees were removed.
A section of roadway with a steep side slope was flattened to a 4 on 1 slope as a safety upgrade. Guide rail safely upgrades were installed and damaged railing was replaced and extended in some locations. Some of the safety upgrades included crash cushion attenuating terminal, end terminal for HPBO, modified corrugated beam guide rail, and heavy post block out corrugated rail. The shoulder area was graded, material was filled in low areas, and new delineators were installed.
