New Haven-Hartford-Springfield High Speed Rail Project

New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Rail Program is committed to enhancing safety at grade crossings in the corridor. When the new rail service launches in 2016, the number of trains will increase from 6 to 17 roundtrips per day and trains will operate at higher speeds. VN Engineers was responsible for the grade crossings designs of ten crossings in Phase 3A and nine crossings in Phase 2. The roadway plans included plans, profiles, cross sections, signing and marking and utility coordination, estimates and specifications. The NHHS rail corridor includes 38 public at-grade crossings. The current plan calls for elimination of two at-grade crossings near Hartford – Flatbush Avenue and Flower Street
– as part of the New Britain-Hartford Busway Program (CT Fastrak). Also, the Brooks Street at-grade crossing in Meriden will be closed as part of the upgrade of the Meriden Station. VN will also participate in public hearings as needed to incorporate the needs of the various municipalities into the design of these grade crossings.

New Railroad Station at Fairfield Metro Center, Fairfield, CT

VN Engineers' contributions to the inspection included the inspection of the installation of signals, catenary and tracks along with the review of project documentation, inspection of building demolition and structural excavation, concrete testing, inspection of vertical structures (vehicular and pedestrian-walk bridges) including the installation of structural reinforced concrete, inspection of utility and drainage installation including backfill, compaction and sedimentation controls, and the inspection of the removal process and transportation of contaminated soils. Coordination between VN Engineers and the Connecticut Department of Transportation has been a large part of this project and has been critical for its smooth running. Inspectors also monitored Metro-North railroad force account work, DWR, and upheld knowledge of the Site Manager Program.
